Sportive and easy to drive, the MGB (1962-1980)
has revolutionized the sports car market and taught many generations in Europe and
the US what a sports car is about.
Slip behind the wooden Moto-Lita wheel and the MGB breathes instant familiarity.
The well-spaced pedals are light and satisfying in action, while the stubby
gearlever is perfectly placed and a delight to use. The fine gearbox is one of
the highlights of the car, with a stiff but positive change. The rack and pinion
steering has lots of feel but can be a little heavy at slow speeds. Near perfect
front to rear weight distribution and a stiff chassis spell fine handling and the
car corners safely without any vices. The engine revs freely and with a
throaty exhaust note and propels the car to a sporty pace, while powerful disc
brakes do the stopping for you.
Modern and yet " so British ", it was a success for almost twenty years and it still
remains today an icon of the British roadster. First model of a series, the MkI
shown here, is the purest expression of what the MGB was meant to be. |
